The Department of the Classics at Harvard University is rated top for its Classics Doctoral programs. The department has graduate students from many countries in eastern and western Europe, and from New Zealand and South Africa, as well as the US and Canada. It offers a variety of approaches, emphasizing a wide range of knowledge and skills rather than a narrow early specialization. Traditionally, the PhD in Classical Philology has been the degree taken by most doctoral candidates, but the Department also offers degrees in Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philosophy, Medieval Latin, Byzantine Greek, and Modern Greek.
